week one

FIRST MEETING
Looked at the process of SHG meeting and what are the critical components. The group agreed on the potential to develop a visual accounting tool that will reduce the dependence on the group accountant as well as provide an opportunity for the SHG itself to do the bulk of the book keeping. This could help in increasing the number of SHGs in a community, as availability of a group accountant is a critical component. This tool can reduce the workload for group accountant, providing better opportunity for serving more SHG thereby reducing the operating cost for the SHGs  and at the same time not taking income away from the accountant.

The meeting today led to following discoveries.
  • The members recognize their names visually, even if they can not write the name.
  • The 20% operating cost to have a group accountant is a big stumbling block.
  • The main taska are:
Entering the savings amount against the correct name.
Adding the penalty amount for members who were absent.
The total amount of savings for a meeting.
The total amount of penalties collected for that meeting.
  • The main characteristics for the proposed tool that we are looking at are:
    Simplicity
    Correctable
    Transparency
Simple process leading to an error free result

SECOND MEETING
We split up into two teams after  the initial discussion. The focus was to critically look at the main tasks that we need to address to hopefully propose a visual book keeping method, that would eliminate errors in the process, would reduce the cost for SHG in the first year.

The two teams looked a a number of analogue approaches towards creating a visual method for keeping track of a fixed amount of money for every meeting.
